RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership (NC IOPL), a pioneer in nonpartisan leadership training and development, is proud to announce its official rebranding as the North Carolina Institute of Public Leadership (NC IOPL). This name change reflects the organization’s mission to empower individuals not only for political office but for leadership roles that serve the public across all sectors.
In its 39 years, IOPL has trained more than 1,200 Fellows, many of whom have gone on to serve in elected office, manage campaigns, lead advocacy efforts, and work in government agencies. However, the rebrand addresses a common misconception about the organization’s focus.
“The decision to rebrand stems from a misunderstanding we frequently encounter,” said Brad Young, Executive Director of IOPL. “People often assume our program is only for those planning to run for office. In reality, the Institute has always trained leaders for a wide variety of public service roles, from government agencies to nonprofit advocacy. The new name better reflects that mission.”
The rebrand aligns with the vision articulated by Bill Friday, the Institute’s first board chair and a guiding force behind its founding:
“The only purpose of the Institute of Political Leadership is to produce better qualified, ethical, accessible, and more representative public leaders in North Carolina’s state and local governments. The Institute is a bipartisan, nonprofit organization providing leadership training and skills to persons identified as having the potential to become our future public leaders.”
