We will be at the studio of WKKR/WKZL-FM in Greensboro, where each Fellow will be the subject of a radio talk show interview and interviewed as a candidate by a radio talk show host. The format is very much in line with what you can expect as a candidate, and the idea is to familiarize you with a common form of communication in the political campaign and to prepare you to be more effective in its use. Just as TV interviews, you need to know your story, your message, and what you want to accomplish with the interview. You are having a conversation with the interviewer, but your target voters are listening in.

In the afternoon we are back at UNCG and joined by B.J. Rudell, Associate Director of the Center for Political Leadership, Innovation, and Service (POLIS) at Duke University. B.J.’s improvisational background includes consulting work for the World Bank, where he trained various departments on ways to enhance communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. This module will teach our Fellows to take risks and to respond confidently in the moment to whatever happens. The improviser develops a mindset that includes curiosity, high stakes listening, flexibility, and the desire to build strong relationships.
