SUMMARY:NC IOPL Alumni Continuing Education - "Polling"
DESCRIPTION:This module is led by Martin Kifer\, Associate Professor and Director of the HPU Survey Research Center. Polling is both art and science\, Martin will lead us through some of the “science” of polling\, and then through some of the artful and strategic applications to the current political climate. There are many pitfalls in a complex campaign environment. Too much or too little reliance on polling represent additional pitfalls. The understanding of polling—even if only a basic understanding will make you a better-informed consumer and an informed participant in your own campaign strategy and planning processes. \nReservations must be made in advance for the Polling Module – All attendees must be registered and submitted to HPU Security prior to the module in order to gain access to campus. Ticket Sales end 3/21/18 at noon. \n \nClick to Register – “Polling”

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Six
DESCRIPTION:Chip Scholz will lead us in his session on “Vision and Values.” He will ask you to examine what your vision is for yourself in public service and how it is impacted by your personal values. \nIn the afternoon\, the Fellows will join the Leadership Council for their annual meeting and luncheon\, and welcome Dr. Omar Ali\, Dean of the International Honors School at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. As we know\, the unaffiliated voter or “Independent” is currently the fastest growing affiliation in North Carolina. Dr. Ali will lead the discussion of what this means to the political landscape of our state and future elections.

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Six
DESCRIPTION:Our sixth weekend begins with Ralph Mitchell.  Ralph is Chairman of the Board and co-founder of Nehemiah—The Leadership Company.  He will lead us in a thought-provoking and perhaps not always a comfortable exploration of diversity and politics in North Carolina.  This session will touch on some of the most difficult and potentially sensitive areas in contemporary American politics.  Some of the exercises will force you to make tough choices and to articulate your views and why you have them.  The changing face of North Carolina is apparent everywhere today and projected demographic changes over the next two decades promise even more diversity.  With that diversity\, we can expect intense political debates and you must be prepared as political leaders at all levels to address the issues in an informed\, substantive\, and effective manner.  Leading your constituents and shaping public opinion will require strategic political leadership—simply getting elected and holding to old political platitudes will not be enough if North Carolina is to adapt to these changes and thrive economically\, socially\, and politically.  The issues of race and gender\, among others\, and their linkages to a number of this state’s most challenging public policy problems (education\, poverty\, crime\, jobs\, and economic development—all of which are part of the budget debate\, too\, of course)\, cannot be fully and meaningfully addressed without confronting some of our most personal thoughts and even biases. \n \nThese sessions are critical to the development of future political leaders. During the evening session\, we will be joined by Mayor Nancy Vaughan\, Executive Director – City of Greensboro\, Marcus Brandon\, Executive Director – CarolinaCan\, and Jose Oliva\, Fellow – ZSR Foundation. Together they will form a panel and discuss the issues of diversity affecting minorities\, i.e. Women\, LBGTQ\, and Latinos.

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Five
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWe will be at the studio of WKKR/WKZL-FM in Greensboro\, where each Fellow will be the subject of a radio talk show interview and interviewed as a candidate by a radio talk show host. The format is very much in line with what you can expect as a candidate\, and the idea is to familiarize you with a common form of communication in the political campaign and to prepare you to be more effective in its use. Just as TV interviews\, you need to know your story\, your message\, and what you want to accomplish with the interview. You are having a conversation with the interviewer\, but your target voters are listening in. \n  \nIn the afternoon we are back at UNCG and joined by B.J. Rudell\, Associate Director of the Center for Political Leadership\, Innovation\, and Service (POLIS) at Duke University. B.J.’s improvisational background includes consulting work for the World Bank\, where he trained various departments on ways to enhance communication\, collaboration\, and leadership skills. This module will teach our Fellows to take risks and to respond confidently in the moment to whatever happens. The improviser develops a mindset that includes curiosity\, high stakes listening\, flexibility\, and the desire to build strong relationships. \n \n

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Five
DESCRIPTION:In politics\, as well as any public service environment\, the role of the media is critical. We hear too much about adversarial relationships between the press and those in public service. Big mistake! They need you\, and you need them! Developing healthy and respectful relationships with the press is essential to having candidates and their issues presented accurately. On Friday evening\, we will hear a panel of media professionals talk about “How to Work with the Media”. We have representatives from both print and TV media. \n \nAfter the panel\, each Fellow will have the opportunity to be interviewed individually by a member of the panel. This is a wonderful practical application for all of you. No one truly understands the interview process until you have gone through it. Each interview will last approximately 10 minutes\, and you will be interviewed regarding the office you are seeking. This is a great opportunity for you to gain a better understanding of how you can best work with the media to get the results you both want.

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Four
DESCRIPTION:We begin Saturday’s session with one of the most important topics of campaigns – fundraising\, with 2012 Fall Fellow\, Chris McCoy. Fundraising is an essential ingredient of all campaigns—large and small—and usually is the component most candidates and campaigns struggle with. Chris will help us explore the essentials of effective fundraising strategy and the techniques he recommends for putting that strategy into action. \n \nIn the afternoon\, we learn about the foundations of liberal and conservative thought\, featuring Chris Fitzsimon\, Political Consultant and Director of The Newsroom\, and John Hood\, President of the John William Pope Foundation. This discussion and your interaction with Chris and John are intended to broaden our understanding of the school of thought that underlies electoral politics in the U.S. and to lay a foundation for a continuing civil dialogue and constructive debate of policy options. They will also discuss the role of “think tanks” and share some information about their organizations – what they do and how they do it.

SUMMARY:Spring Fellows - Weekend Four
DESCRIPTION:We begin the weekend with Cindy Morgan from Spectrum Media. She will talk about how to buy media in the digital world and how your advertising can be tailored to fit your budget while maximizing the reach of your message. Using multiple media platforms to reach the voters\, and utilizing targeted digital media is one of the tools to winning campaigns at statewide and local levels. \nFriday evening we will continue to learn how to put together a Campaign Plan. Following last weekend’s discussion on “How to Write a District Analysis”\, Executive Director Ross Harris will now discuss “How to Prepare a Campaign Budget and Timeline” from her years of experience as a campaign manager. You will now have the tools you need to complete your own campaign plan for the office for which you are running as part of the class curriculum.

SUMMARY:NC IOPL Hometown Debates – Newton
DESCRIPTION:In the fall of 2016\, IOPL hosted our first Hometown Debate series with televised debates in Wilson (Lt. Governor)\, Asheboro (Attorney General)\, and Statesville (Treasurer). We felt it was important to ensure that North Carolina’s smaller cities and towns were brought into the conversation about these races and their issues addressed. \nAs this is not an election year for statewide offices\, we’ve decided to choose a singular topic and host three debates\, again in our smaller communities. We will be focusing on three questions regarding NC’s public education system. \nTuesday\, October 24th \nOld Post Office Playhouse – Newton\, NC \nShould performance play more of a role in North Carolina teacher compensation?\nPanelists: \n\nMatt Ellinwood\, NC Justice Center\nTerry Stoops\, John Locke Foundation\nNC State Representative\, Craig Horn\nNC State Representative\, Susan Fisher\n\nAll debates begin at 7:00 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. \nREGISTRATION TO ATTEND
