Greensboro, NC – The North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership (NCIOPL) announced today another installment of its popular Hometown Debate series, with three events focused on the state’s education policy. Throughout the month of October, IOPL will host three nights of debate addressing teacher compensation, oversight of school choice, and the financing of local school construction.

The debates will be co-hosted by NCIOPL and the Chambers of Commerce in each of the three host cities –  Rocky Mount, Newton, and Burlington.

In addition to public officials and other regional leaders in education, Matt Ellinwood from the North Carolina Justice Center and Terry Stoops from the John Locke Foundation will serve as panelists for each of the 2017 Hometown Debates. NCIOPL, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, hosted debates in 2016 that featured candidates for Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and State Treasurer.

“The goal of these events is to encourage and enhance education dialogue at a local level – equipping voters with information they can use to make more informed business, policy, and electoral decisions,” said NCIOPL Board Chair Nelle Hotchkiss.

The 2017 Hometown Debates will take place at the Booker T. Theatre in Rocky Mount on October 10, the Paramount Theatre in Burlington on October 16, and the Old Post Office Playhouse in Newton on October 24.

All of the events will be taped and televised statewide by Spectrum News, with Loretta Boniti as the moderator. The North Carolina Radio News Network will broadcast the debates live. Streaming coverage and online sources will also be available.

Additional information on panelists will be announced closer to the dates of the events.
